European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
